VALLEY GOES TO RELAY CHAMPS, ZATOPEK

VALLEY RELAY TEAMS JOIN THE CARNIVAL AT LAKESIDE

The 2025 AV Victorian Relay Championships were held in partnership with the LAV Victorian Relay Championships, and the combination certainly produced a carnival atmosphere. The stands at Lakeside were full, the noise level was pumping and the events were highly competitive. Even with the AV program being extended to three days, it was still necessary to prune some of the events from the AV competition that had been held in previous years. No doubt the experiment will be subject to a review and the opinion of clubs and athletes sought after.

Over the course of the weekend, 59 DVAC athletes (25 Female and 34 Male) took part in the events and combined their efforts in a total 29 teams. There were 45 Junior athletes in the turnout over the weekend. The club won a total of 15 medals (5 Gold, 7 Silver and 3 Bronze) (The corresponding numbers in 2024 were 76 athletes and 37 teams for 22 medals.)

Relay Championships are an unpredictable event with the likelihood of having to ask athletes to help-out at short notice when injury or unavailability occurs. The cooperation and team spirit of the DVAC athletes over the weekend was impressive and meant that all of the DVAC teams advertised were able to compete. Thank you. Thanks to all of the parents & supporters who made this possible.

GOLD MEDALS:

M16 Shot Put: Jerome Nu’U led all comers at the Shot Put Relay when he sent the 3kg Shot out for 14.60m. Wilson Riley (12.37m) and Gabriel Kozaris (11.19m)joined the pb party to produce a combined winning distance of 38.16m. This total put the team over 4m ahead of their nearest rivals!

M16 Medley Relay: Josh Koegler, Toby Hamilton, Zander Botha and Samuel Reeves put up a stunning performance to complete the Mile distance in 3:44.67 and gap the second team by over 5 seconds. The team also smashed the DVAC club record and their time extends up to U20 as the best for DVAC.

F40+ 4 x 100m: Meg Nicholls, Kate Ryan, Michelle King and Victoria Lindores had to work hard to shake off the team from Chilwell but a great last leg by Victoria Lindores sealed the deal. For Meg and Kate, the Gold medal adds to their other two from the last two years.

M60+ 4 x 100m: It was a runaway victory by Greg Luck, Luke De Biasi, Lyal Douglas and Jeff Young who completed the 400m in 58.53 to set a new club record for the M60.

M60+ 4 x 400m: Another victory for the DVAC 60+ team. This time the combination of Lyal Douglas, Greg Luck, Rob Wendel and Jeff Young got the job done in 5:22.66.

ELYSSIA’S BIG NIGHT OUT

It’s been building for some time now, but Elyssia Kenshole has a brand new pb in the Pole Vault. With a pb of 4.30m set in March earlier this year, Elyssia has been building toward pushing that pb even further. At the Zatopek:10 meet at Lakeside Stadium last Saturday, Elyssia achieved her goal and cleared the bar at 4.35m.

The journey to that achievement involved some risk taking. After clearing 3.80m at her second attempt, Elyssia cleared 3.95m and then 4.05m at her first attempt before missing her first attempt at 4.15m. The decision was then taken to pass at 4.15m and 4.25m before attempting 4.35m. After missing this height at her first attempt, Elyssia night was made when she cleared 4.35m at her second attempt. Elyssia then made three unsuccessful attempts at 4.45m. But … the story will be continued.

Heidi Kuppler, 14, has only recently returned to running after a long lay off due to injury and is making significant progress. At the Zatopek:10 meet Heidi finished in second place in the Female 16 Years 1500m. Heidi stayed in the pack of 11 runners until the final lap when she made a move to the lead. Heidi was caught by one runner before she crossed the finish line in second place in a new pb time of 4:44.21.

Keely Boyne (FOpen) won her Heat of the 60m Victorian Championship in a time of 7.53 to qualify for the Final. In the Final, Keely finished in third place in a time of 7.63.

Asher Andrews (M20) ran a 7.08 in his Heat of the 60m Vic Champs.
