VALLEY ATHLETES IN FINALS CHARGE

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club went into Round 10 of the AV Shield season of athletics at the East Region with nine teams placed in the top two on their ladder. With the need to secure a top two finish at the end of Round 12 to make it to the Shield Victorian finals, it was always going to be a fight to maintain all nine teams in first or second place at the most competitive region in the state. By the end of Round 10, the only team to slip a place, was the DVAC Men's 40+ team that were in third place, behind the Box Hill team by the narrowest of percentages.

The Women's Open Division 1 team held on to second place despite finishing third in Round 10. Morgan Dean ran her quickest 100m for the season recording a time of 13.59. She was well supported by Crista Ashby on 13.71. Lauren Crowe was back to her best form in the 1500m where she secured maximum points for the team. Crowe finished to 1500m in 4:52.2. Ashleigh Hamilton continued her good form from the Victorian Country Championships a week ago, this week posting season best results in the 100m Hurdles with a 14.9 and the Long Jump with a leap of 5.83m.

The Under 20 Women seem to have a strong hold on top position and in Round 10 Sarah Leeming set the example to her fellow team-mates by tackling the 3000m Steeplechase for the first time. Leeming completed the event in a time of 14:42.4.

The Under 16 Women's team did enough in Round 10 to hang onto a narrow lead at the head of the ladder. Ellen Brasier was a tower of strength in the team with season best performances in the 400m with a time of 63.04 and the Discus with a throw of 23.42m. As well, Brasier topped the age group in the 90m Hurdles with a run of 13.85 as well as in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.94m. In the 4x100m relay, Brasier along with Georgette Wattling, Jazmyn Keppel and Maddy Quinn recorded the fastest relay for the Valley women's teams. Their time was 54.01.

The Women's Under 14 team were clear winners of their age group for Round 10 and remain clear leaders on the ladder. Chelsea Owen-Smith broke the DVAC record for the Under 13 Women in the 2000m Walk, when she finished in 12:18.8. Owen-Smith topped the age group in the Javelin with a throw of 21.51m. Other members of the team to put in leading performances for their age group were Alana Toso in the 100m (13.89), Emily Lapolla in the 400m (64.16), Lara Kolar in the 1500m (4:57.5) and Ilara Farrugia in the Long Jump (4.53m).

A depleted Men's Under 20 team still did enough to finish second in Round 10 but slipped to second place on the ladder. Patrick Lacock-Smith led the age group in the Javelin (34.17m) and the Discus (26.66m) as well as competing in the 100m (12.94) and the Long Jump (5.32m).

The Men's Under 18 team finished second in Round 10 and continue to hold down second place on the ladder. Aidan Silva generated valuable points for the team in six individual events. Silva competed in the 100m, the 400m, the 110m Hurdles, Long Jump, Javelin and Discus. The 4x100m Relay team of Matthew Sholakis, Linden Marsh, Jack Kidgell and Sam Davies recorded the quickest relay time for the DVAC Men's teams, crossing the line in 46.48.

DVAC's Men's U16 team continues to hold second place on the ladder. The team was strengthened by the return of Michael Jasper from injury. Jasper threw the Javelin 23.71m and led the Valley team in the Discus with a throw of 34.42m.

The Men's Under 14 team remain in second place after a good showing in Round 10. The team was strengthened by the addition of Nicholas Giarrizzo who recorded a time of 56.61 for the 400m on his debut.
