The Diamond Valley Athletic Club is set to contest the East Region finals in nine of the fourteen divisions. Going into Round 12 of the AV Shield competition last Saturday, the Valley teams were secure in their top four position in the Women's Under 18, Under 20 and Division 1 and the Men's Under 14, Under 16, Under 18, Under 20 and Men's 40+. The Women's Under 14 team were fighting to hang on to fourth spot.
The final round of the AV Shield regular season was held as a twilight meet at the Doncaster venue with the hot conditions better suited to the shorter track events. In the 100m, Monica Brennan took advantage of the moderate tail wind to record her quickest time for the season when she was clocked at 12.23. In the Men's 100m, Dale Lyons ran the fastest time for the Valley with a time of 11.38.
The highlight of the round for DVAC came in the Men's 400m where Iain Douglas (U18, pic at right) stormed home to record the first sub 50 second run by a Valley runner for several years. While Douglas came close to the mark at the 2009 Australian All Schools Track & Field Championships when he clocked 50.58, his 49.90 at Doncaster represented a giant breakthrough for the talented speedster.
Olivia Getson (U18) marked her return to the track with a solid run in the 400m of 61.55 to lead the times for the Valley women. Getson had earlier run a 100m in 13.54 and joined forces with Catherine Brennan, Monica Brennan and Leah Phillips to win the Women's Under 18 4x100m relay in 48.99. This was the fastest women's relay at the venue.
Bernie Smith, who ran the 400m in 58.2, coaches both Getson and Douglas.
Ashleigh Hamilton (U20) had a season best performance in the 100m Hurdles, going under 15 seconds for the first time when she crossed the line in 14.7. Hamilton also had good performances in the 100m (13.08), Javelin (28.60m) and the Triple Jump (11.40m). Hamilton was also a member of the winning 4x100m relay team in the Under 20 women. Hamilton, Crista Ashby, Sarah Walshe and Taryn Ashby crossed the line in 52.51 to be the second quickest team at the venue.
Club president, Rob Wendel, competing for the Men's 40+ team, led by example in the 3000m Steeplechase when he completed the regular season unbeaten in the event. In Round 12, Wendel finished the Steeple in 12:25.7.
Chris Lynch lowered his own 1500m club record for the Men's 55 age group to 4:43.3. Meanwhile, Cooper Owen broke the U13 2000m Steeple record to add to his recent swag of walk records.
Brynton Ashton (U18) continued a run of personal best performances for the season. Ashton broke through the 4min30sec barrier for the 1500m for the first time, finishing in 4:29.5. Jessica Campbell was the best performed for the women with a time of 5:27.8.
In the throws, Chiara Di Girolami and Andrew Drossinis, each produced personal best performances. Di Girolami sent the Discus out a distance of 23.27m, while Drossinis extended his best Javelin throw to 44.54m.
Patrick Lacock-Smith (U18) showed his value to the Men's Under 18 team again in Round 12. Lacock-Smith earned valuable points for his team in the 100m (13.09), 110m Hurdles (18.4), Discus (23.91m), Javelin (31.36m), and the Triple Jump (10.17m).
