VALLEY ATHLETES WIN FOUR PENNANTS AT REGION FINALS

The Diamond Valley Athletic Club came away from the East Region venue finals well satisfied that its athletes had won four East Region pennants in the heat of finals action. The Women's Under 18 as well as the Men's Under 18, Under 20 and Men's 40+ teams all finished the competition at the head of the top four teams competing for the honour in each division.

Another two Valley teams, the Women's Under 20 and the Men's Under 14 finished in second position and won the right to compete at the Athletics Victoria Shield finals for top placed teams from venues around the state. DVAC also had teams in the Women's Under 14, the Open Women's Division 1 and the Men's Under 16 sections of the East Region finals.

The Women's Under 18 team was the only Valley line-up to take an early lead and hold on to it until the last event of the finals program. The other three Valley teams to win their division, all had to come from behind to snatch victory in more dramatic fashion. At the end of the competition, there was little separating the teams at the top of the Men's U18, U20 and 40+ divisions.

The Women's U18 team was set on its winning way by the sprint line up of Catherine Brennan, Olivia Getson and Leah Phillips. Other athletes to pick up maximum points included Maria Benke in the 400m Hurdles, Sarah Leeming in the 3000m, Jacqueline Cowell in the 3000m Walk and Anika Peachey in the Hammer Throw.

A turning point for the Men's Under 18 team, came with the efforts of Patrick Lacock-Smith and Joshua Clancy in the Hammer Throw. The 23 points they attracted with their throws, were enough to edge the team over the line. Paul Townsend and Brynton Ashton gave the team valuable representation in the 3000m where Townsend finished in second place in a personal best time of 9:15.7. In the 800m, the examples of Jack Lewis and Iain Douglas were inspiring. Jack Lewis lined up for the 800m minutes after having run a 200m in 24.24. Iain Douglas having already won the 400m Hurdles in 57.37, could still crank out a 2:07.0 in the 800m.

The five member Men's Under 20 team scored their victory by their willingness to take on a heavy workload. Nathan Riali was central to the teams' performance, undertaking the 200m, 800m, 4x400m relay and the Long Jump. Despite their workload, the relay team of Riali, Shane LeFevre, Matthew Smith and Aaron Smith were two seconds off the club record when they finished in 3:27.1. Riali won the Long Jump with a leap of 5.98m and Aaron Smith won the 400m Hurdles in 58.96 and the High Jump with a clearance over 1.72m.

The Men 40+ team were trailing the Collingwood team until the final events. Chris Lynch, Philip Champion and Quentin Kidgell filled first, second and fourth places in the 5000m to make a vital breakthrough. Andrew Stirling won the Hammer Throw as well as the Shot Put while Luke De Bias not only won the points for the High Jump and Long Jump, but set club records in the process. De Bias cleared 1.67m in the High Jump and in the Long Jump he landed a season best at 5.86m. In the relay, Antony Milovac, Lindley Cowell, Luke Getson and Mark Bevilacqua finished second to the Collingwood team in 4:10.0.

There were plenty of highlights from the other teams as every athlete gave their all to help their team. Matthew Sholakis (U16) ran a personal best time of 2:04.2 for the 800m. Josep Milovac (U16) improved his best leap in the High Jump to 1.72m while team-mate Kieran Poppe added 7cm to his previous best clearance in the High Jump when he cleared 1.57m. Matthew Haynes (U16) went within 2cm of his best effort in the Long Jump when he jumped a distance of 6.85m.

Ashleigh Hamilton, a member of the 2009 AV Shield winning U20 team, did everything in her power to get her team back in the Shield finals in 2010. Hamilton won full points in the High Jump, Long Jump and Shot Put as well as running in the relay team that finished in second place.
