Eight members of the Diamond Valley Athletic Club competed at the 2009 Australian All Schools Track & Field Championships held in Hobart from Friday 4th December until Monday 7th December. In total, these eight athletes have come away from the National Schools Championships with an amazing total of thirteen medals (4 Gold, six Silver and three Bronze)!
Matthew Haynes won the 100m and Long Jump and was a member of the Vic 'A' relay teams that won the 4x100m and 4x200m. In the 200m, Matthew won a Bronze medal. Matthew established new club records in the MU16 100m and 200m and in the Long Jump he sailed to a 19cm pb, finally landing at 6.87m to set a new club record up to the U20 age group. Congratulations on a great Championship from all at the Valley.
In the MU14 800m, Dean Neofitou equalled a long-standing club record set by Rodney Upton. Dean ran a 2 second pb in the 800m and in the 1500m the very next day, he came out and ran a 6 second pb to finish in second place in 4:23.53.
The common theme of the Championships was that our athletes produced their best efforts under the pressure of Championship conditions and often produced something even better in the heat of finals. It was a huge weekend of competition and the Christmas break will be a welcome one for these talented young athletes.
